Sighting a site for citations.

29 Oct

Too many people are complaining of |sīt| mix-ups lately. This makes me sad. Come on people, these three rank among the easiest to distinguish homophones.

Sight = what you see with your eyes (of Old English origin)
Site = a page on the internet, and/or the location of a specific construction project, or where a particular event has occurred (of Latin origin)
Cite = a reference to something else (of Old French origin)

Got that? Eyes, Place, Reference. Three things that have nothing to do with each other.

Think of them as distant cousins 624 times removed… one wound up in Olde Englande,  another in Ancient Rome, and the third in Vieille France. Really, the only commonality they share (besides that pronunciation thing) is that none of them rhyme with the others.
